Understanding Weaving Types and the Materials Used

So, what are the different weaving types?

Many are confused between knit wire mesh and woven wire mesh. You should know that the ultimate purpose of knit wire mesh is to contain the livestock (like chickens and pigs) and prevent them from going astray. As for a woven wire mesh, it is mainly used for filtering.

Woven wire mesh is also known as wire cloth. It has different weaving types and profiles. Choosing the right weaving type can make a difference when it comes to your application. To help you get started, here are the different types of weaving:

  • Plain: this is by far the most common type. In this pattern, the wires are woven alternately over each other. This type of weave is widely used in window screens and vibrating screens.
  • Crimped: in this pattern, a pre-treated wire (usually wavy) is used to ensure accurate opening. With this, it can keep the wires in position. There are two types of crimped woven mesh – flat top and lock. The flat top is used to improve the efficiency and reduce the blocking of vibrating screens. The lock crimped, on the other hand, is mostly crimped directly during the weaving process.
  • Twill: in this weaving pattern, two wires are woven over and under the adjacent pair. As a result, you will see a diagonal pattern. Twill weave is noted for its stability because it offers the possibility of using a thicker wire without deforming it during the process of weaving.
  • Dutch: Dutch weave comes in three forms – plain, twill, and reverse. Whatever the form, Dutch weaves are mainly utilized in the filtering industries.

What about the materials used?

You must understand that in a woven wire mesh, there is no single material that features all the characteristics. With this, you need to spend some time examining the materials so you can select the right one according to your needs.

The different materials used for fabricating woven wire mesh include the following:

  • Copper: there are three types of copper: red copper (contains 99.8% copper), phosphor bronze (contains 85-90% copper and 10-15% tin) and brass (contains copper and zinc). Of the three, the most common is brass. Brass has tension stress, extensibility and resistant to alkali and acid.
  • Aluminum alloy: this offers a good corrosion resistance not to mention thermal/electrical conductivity. The best thing about this material is its ease of fabrication.
  • Galvanized wire: this is a kind of surface treatment and the material used is carbon steel. It is known for its outstanding resistance to rust and corrosion.
  • Stainless steel: in the production area, this material is the best because of its remarkable characteristics like resistance from different elements like acid, heat, corrosion, alkali, and rust.
